Kanjiyama Privacy Policy
In short: Kanjiyama has no accounts and no servers of its own. Your study progress and settings stay on your device. The app is free thanks to ads from Google AdMob, which collects some data to show and measure ads. Anonymous usage statistics and crash reports (Google Firebase) help me improve the app. Both are described below.
This policy explains how Kanjiyama ("the app"), a Japanese kanji app made by Phyo Myanmar Kyaw ("I", "me"), handles information. It applies to the app on iOS and Android.
Information that stays on your device
- Your study progress: kanji you mark as learned or bookmark, quiz results and review schedule, and your daily study record (streak and statistics).
- Your settings, such as language, theme, text size and daily reminder time.
This information is stored on your device. It is not uploaded as a whole and has no account attached; deleting the app deletes it. The usage statistics described below only count individual events, such as a finished quiz and its score.
Notifications
If you turn on the daily reminder, the reminders are scheduled on your device. No notification service or server of mine is involved, and you can turn reminders off in the app's Settings or in your phone's settings.
Pronunciation audio
Japanese words are read aloud with your phone's built-in text-to-speech voices. The app does not record or send any audio.
Usage statistics and crash reports (Google Firebase)
To learn which parts of the app help learners, and to fix problems, the app uses Google Analytics for Firebase and Firebase Crashlytics. They may collect and process:
- events inside the app, such as the screens you open, finished quizzes and their scores, kanji you mark as learned, finished writing practice, and the app language you chose;
- a random identifier for this app installation, your device model, operating system and app version, and an approximate location (country or region) derived from your IP address;
- crash reports: what the app was doing when it crashed, with the device state at that moment.
This information is not linked to your name or any account, and I use it only in aggregate to improve Kanjiyama. Firebase keeps analytics data for up to 14 months and crash reports for up to 90 days. See Privacy and Security in Firebase.
Advertising (Google AdMob)
The app shows ads through Google AdMob. To show, limit and measure ads and to prevent fraud, the Google Mobile Ads SDK may collect and process:
- device identifiers, such as the Advertising ID on Android and, only if you allow tracking, the Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA) on iOS;
- your IP address, from which an approximate location may be inferred;
- information about your device and how you interact with ads, and diagnostic data.
How Google uses this information is described in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services and the Google Privacy Policy.
The app asks ads to be suitable for general audiences.
Your choices
- iPhone and iPad: the app asks for permission before any tracking. You can change this at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
- Android: you can reset or delete your Advertising ID, or opt out of personalized ads, in your device's Google or Privacy settings.
- European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland: the app asks for your consent through Google's consent form, and you can change your choice any time under Settings → About → Privacy choices in the app.
If you decline, you will still see ads, but they will not be personalized.
Selling data
I do not sell your personal information.
Children
Kanjiyama is a study app for learners of Japanese and is not directed at children under 13. I do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
